Drama Therapy can be a powerful and unique tool to assist in the healing of trauma.

Course Description:
This 1-credit  hybrid course will meet on site and online. Its focus is on utilizing drama therapy to treat clients who are coping with trauma. Topics will include various types of trauma,(including chronic, complex, single episode, “Big T” and “small t” trauma), and the adjunctive use of mindfulness techniques, guided visualization, and bilateral stimulation.
Learning Objectives:
Students will learn a multi-phase drama therapy treatment approach, understanding the impact of trauma.

Students will determine how to facilitate the reprocessing of traumatic material taking into account the ways in which trauma is stored in the body and in the brain,

Students will learn to assess for and identify the level of traumatic disturbance being experienced by a client.

Students will understand how to approach the treatment process.

As trauma expert, Bessel A. van der Kolk states we “focus not only on regulating the intense memories activated by trauma but also on restoring a sense of agency, engagement, and commitment through ownership of body and mind' (The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma).
Dates of Hybrid 2 1/2 hour classes:

Eating Disorders are often misunderstood and complex in terms of clinical presentation, treatment and outcomes.
Course Description:
This 1-credit online special populations course offering is an introduction to drama therapy addressing those affected by eating disorders inclusive of their loved ones. There is a need for drama therapists within eating disorder treatment settings because the demand for creative art therapy methods has increased as part of integrated care. Drama Therapy offers substantial benefits to those with eating disorders using role, improv, script, masks, and projective techniques to explore parts of self, interpersonal relationships, and coping in creative and meaningful ways.
This course will give an overview of eating disorders, best practices, cultural and age specific care, co-occurring conditions, family-based care, levels of care, and treatment planning. Various methods will be explored through on-line discussions, clinical case scenarios, readings, videos, and experiential practice assignments.

1.Principles of Drama Therapy (3 credit course  hybrid or online=45 hours); 

2.Therapeutic Theatre/ Life Script (1-2 credit courses); 

3.Psychodrama/Sociodrama (must be with certified psycho dramatist for 3 credit course);

4.Ethical Issues in Creative Art Therapies (3 credit course online); 

5.Creative Drama & Improvisation (3 credit course); 

6. Drama Therapy with Special Populations (1-3 credit courses online and hybrid); 

7.Projective Methods of Drama Therapy (2-3 credit courses)--Elective & certificate program for professionals 

8.Research in Drama Therapy (3 credit course online)

REQUIRED PSYCHOLOGY COURSES (4): 
Students may opt to matriculate p/t in university MA courses & on line university MA courses (Courses: Abnormal Psych; Child life and Life Span & Development; Group Psychology, Personality Psych) Among these, are acceptable variations (see AT guidelines). 
Ethics, Research, Multiculturalism courses can be fulfilled as Psych. courses or through SoCal Drama Therapy Centre.

DRAMA THERAPY SUPERVISION/INTERNSHIP AT students are assisted for the 800 internship hours & supervised by a Board Certified Trainer (BCT). The 30 1-hour supervision sessions per NADTA's AT requirements  are part of your individualized AT program at SoCal Drama Therapy Centre. There after, professional hours and other accrued hours stipulated by the NADTA need to be completed (2800 total)

This onsite 3-credit course meets a total of three weekends during the summer months and is geared for Masters/PhD level students, clinicians, creative arts educators, who are studying drama therapy for various educational purposes, clinical practice growth, or in order to become a registered drama therapist (RDT).

Course Description:
This course reviews the history, profession, methods, and research of the drama therapy field. It is a course requirement of the North American Drama Therapy Association (NADTA) in order to become a registered drama therapist and is usually the first course assigned by a board certified trainer (BCT) in order to begin certification for the Alternative Training (AT) program. AT internship hours may begin to be earned while taking this course. The on site course invites a collaborative cohort to participate in monthly assigned readings, creative projects, discussions, and journal writing used for parallel processing personal experience. Art materials, video, and other expressive art tools will complement the more didactic part of the course and will be shared during three summer weekend sessions and three one hour online zoom check-in sessions. Students will create final projects that enable them to actually implement a drama therapy intervention with a preferred method.
 Learning Objectives:

Students will be able to comprehend the history and methods of drama therapy as a modality and profession.
Students will be able to identify several methods used in the field and write and speak about them as well as identify specific methods of interest in their practice.
Students will be able to experience and create drama therapy exercises in accordance to specific action-based methods with various populations and milieus.
Students will be able to support colleagues and assess their own leading abilities in a group setting by modeling both the client role and the leader/facilitator role as part of learning process.

Dates of Low Residency Weekend Summer Classes:
Three Summer Weekends
 June 10-11th  (10:30-6:30) one hour lunch  
 July 8-9th     (10:30-6:30) one hour lunch

.Experiential Self-Care/Poem-House Workshop: Introducing Embodiment, Projective, and Role Play (EPR) Approaches in Drama Therapy  
Pause and make time for yourself. Explore and create through drama therapy, guided meditation, expressive arts, and poem-houses--a three dimensional method of assemblage art developed by UK artist Brigid Collins and further devised as therapeutic and self-care practice by Dr. Mimi Savage in order to uniquely benefit from self-expression, personal awareness, supportive community and a culminating event celebrating your creation. All welcome. This course counts as AT credit required by  NADTA.

4.Projective Methods in Drama Therapy: Applications for Therapeutic & Educational Practice

​Complement and enhance your practice with  person-centered constructivist, action method interventions that encourage client awareness through embodiment and positive affect  without reliance on talk. Learn how to use externalizing projective tools such as puppets, masks, PSA’s with digital apps, art, sand tray, dollhouse, story making, writing, poem houses, and more that can unburden somatic and psychological affects of trauma and other psycho-social conditions. Learn how projective interventions can lead into role playing and role reversal to help clients gain perspective through meaning making. This course meets AT requirement of the NADTA.

The SoCal Drama Therapy Centre  offers curriculum in drama therapy and expressive therapy for professional development​  and for certification to become a registered drama therapist (RDT). Courses are taught on-line, hybrid and on campus to both U.S. and international students. Whether you are entirely new to the profession of facilitating others or you are already a therapist or educator, the Alternative Training (AT) approach means you can take courses at your own pace and complement your existing professional practice or academic course under the supervision of Dr. Myriam Savage, a board certified trainer (BCT) in drama therapy. We will cater to each class/cohort's time zones for online and hybrid courses, consulting on best times for you to meet!
We also offer internship/supervision opportunities for those students already enrolled in accredited college AT programs in the fields of drama therapy and expressive therapy. Our aim is to train interns to be competitive creative art therapists, providing them with a gratifying learning experience and mentorship that prepares them for whatever professional opportunties they will meet.

This is for professionals who are not pursuing the RDT (registered drama therapy) credential from the North American Drama Therapy Association (NADTA).
 


All courses and hourly credits at SoCal Drama Therapy Center follow strict NADTA rules for training requirements. Please review NADTA Alternative training manual at NADTA.org (education) for current course regulations or contact me with questions.







3.​Enrolling now for Principles of Drama Therapy (Instructor Mimi Savage PhD, MA, RDT-BCT):

This onsite 3-credit course meets a total of three weekends during the summer months and is geared for Masters/PhD level students, clinicians, creative arts educators, who are studying drama therapy for various educational purposes, clinical practice growth, or in order to become a registered drama therapist (RDT).

Course Description:
This course reviews the history, profession, methods, and research of the drama therapy field. It is a course requirement of the North American Drama Therapy Association (NADTA) in order to become a registered drama therapist and is usually the first course assigned by a board certified trainer (BCT) in order to begin certification for the Alternative Training (AT) program. AT internship hours may begin to be earned while taking this course. The on site course invites a collaborative cohort to participate in monthly assigned readings, creative projects, discussions, and journal writing used for parallel processing personal experience. Art materials, video, and other expressive art tools will complement the more didactic part of the course and will be shared during three summer weekend sessions and three one hour online zoom check-in sessions. Students will create final projects that enable them to actually implement a drama therapy intervention with a preferred method.
Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to comprehend the history and methods of drama therapy as a modality and profession.
Students will be able to identify several methods used in the field and write and speak about them as well as identify specific methods of interest in their practice.
Students will be able to experience and create drama therapy exercises in accordance to specific action-based methods with various populations and milieus.
Students will be able to support colleagues and assess their own leading abilities in a group setting by modeling both the client role and the leader/facilitator role as part of learning process.


Dates of Low Residency Weekend Summer Classes:
Three Summer Weekends
 June 10-11th  (10:30-6:30) one hour lunch  
 July 8-9th     (10:30-6:30) one hour lunch
August 12-13th (10:30-6:30) one hour lunch. 
Plus one hour on-line check-ins in June, July and August  Dates & times to be determined.  45 hours total = 3 AT credits.
