WHAT IS DRAMA THERAPY?

Drama Therapy is an active, experiential approach to facilitating change. Through storytelling, projective play, purposeful improvisation, and

performance, participants are invited to rehearse desired behaviors, practice being in relationship, expand and find flexibility between life roles, and

perform the change they want to be and see in the world.   --North American Drama Therapy Association

HOW DO I BECOME A REGISTERED DRAMA THERAPIST (RDT)?

Drama Therapists are trained in psychotherapy and theatre arts. A Registered Drama Therapist (RDT) must have a masters or doctoral degree. For instance, many RDTs have degrees in social sciences or in theatre from an academic program accredited by the North American Drama Therapy Association (NADTA). A variety of degrees from mental health counseling, occupational therapy, to nursing, arts education, and others may be determined as acceptable degrees to attain before or while training as a drama therapist. Your earned degree or degree in process is then supplemented by required courses stipulated by the NADTA in an approved program of study at an accredited university or via Alternative Training (AT). The AT program was devised for those who choose an alternative and more independent route to attain certification than from a university drama therapy curriculum, which may not be accessible to a person due to circumstances such as distance, time, and finances. The certification "Registered Drama Therapist" (RDT)  is awarded by the NADTA (the regulating board of RDT peers for all matters of ethics, certification, and membership) to applicants who fulfill these rigorous RDT certification course requirements beyond their MA or PhD academic degree in addition to clinical internships, supervised professional practice, and documented specific hours of experience in theatre arts for instance.  See

about RDT, AT training and required hours beyond course training for the RDT.

Welcome to Studio for Expressive Arts LA (SFEALA) where we invite community to safely gather in order to create social change and awareness through  expressive arts on current issues that matter. At SFEALA, for instance you are welcome to take part in various events throughout the year such as informative integrative medicine and arts-focused lectures as well as be an audience to our resident Readers Theater Group: Women Survivors of Skid Row.  SFEALA is also at the home of the SoCal Drama Therapy Center where we train and inform learners from diverse professions on the benefits and methods of integrating the theatrical and expressive arts with the social sciences and education fields for the social, emotional, psychological, and somatic well-being of various populations.

What makes us stand out?

Through our center's opportunities in community activism, self-discovery, and drama therapy education, we believe the individual seeking personal growth and the student seeking action-based facilitation skills can flourish. Our diverse instructors, who are change agents working for the concerns of mental health and social justice, will inform you about the foundational and current approaches in drama therapy. Our contemporary approach allows us to uniquely offer many required, experiential North American Drama Therapy Association (NADTA) approved courses on line or in hybrid form so that you can be more at ease about learning and your time.

Additionally, all of our educators at SoCal Drama Therapy Center are theatre artists and clinical or educational practitioners who are RDTs from select schools of drama therapy training and can offer you-- the student, more varied training insight. Our instructors are active in their personal creativity as well as in their advocacy for health and wellness through expressive arts, theatre, social sciences, and education.  We are also all contributing members of the North American Drama Therapy Association (NADTA)--our regulating board for certification, and we hold responsible positions of support for the field and the NADTA organization such as being founding members of the SoCal NADTA chapter.  Contact us and begin your drama therapy journey today!
